The trio from Brooklyn THESE ARE POWERS includes a former bass guitarist Pat Noecker of the renowned LIARS, a singer and guitarist Anna Barie and drummer Bill Salas. From the noise experiments at the begining they smoothly moved to more eclectic musical language, which draws on every sources of pop including e.g. hip hop and r´n´b, like in their last album All Abroad Future. Today their musical language may appeal both to the fans of the Sonic Youth and Missy Elliott. The These Are Powers, take great care for the creative aspect of their clips, of their media and other things related to the band. In 2008 we were able to see them in Prague for the first time at their common concert with the Xiu Xiu. That performance was shocking in a good sense for a lot of people.

The FORMER GHOSTS from Los Angeles are a phenomenon of the present alternative scene. Freddy Ruppert is known to informed people already from the previous solo project THIS SONG IS A MESS BUT SO AM I. In the Former Ghosts Freddy is assisted according to their possibilities by Jamie Stewart from the XIU XIU and Nika Roza Danilova from the ZOLA JESUS. The most of the FG’s debut album “Fleurs”, which was published by the London label Upset! The Rhythm, was recorded remotely, without a personal contact, by means of communication technologies. Former Ghosts develop the sound legacy of the Xiu Xiu, but their melodies are more pop-like, at the same time their interpretation is still more exalted. The existence of the Former Ghosts is a message, that the so far not colonized space in the point of intersection of The Smiths, Pet Shop Boys and Joy Division was conquered once for all.

The girls trio VIVIAN GIRLS borrowed their name from the novel by a genius of the outside-art Henry Darger. These girls from Brooklyn react to the wave of girls’ bands in the 50ies and 60ies re-discovered for the today’s audience. Their version of indie rock has a similar naivity, near also to the then girls’ bands such as The Ronettes or The Chantels. At the same time they posses a dose of defiance and noise shade peculiar to the much later wave of riot girrrls. The Vivian Girls have been playing for about three years, they survived one personal exchange (drummer Frankie Rose left for the Crystal Stilts, with whom she performed at Creepy Teepee last year) and they released two albums with the In The Red label (with whom The Strange Boys also publish besides others, our old friends also from the last year Creepy Teepee). Right the first album of the same name, whose promising fortaste was a whole series of singles and EPs, became a sensation and its first edition was sold out in several days.

We heard about the British trio MALE BONDING for the first time from other British, the punkers LOVVERS, who spoke about the MB as about one of the best island bands of the present. And not long after that we heard about the MB again – when they signed a contract with one of the most respected world labels dedicated to the alternative rock, the Sub Pop from Seattle. They prepared a debut for them “Nothing Hurts”, which was published in May and they yielded for it appraising reviews all over the world. Thanks to the Male Bonding we get the message again that punk need not be a simple dance matter, but when deft hands and clever heads manage to borrow and steal from other genres including math rock and indie rock, it can only improve the result form.

The TORO Y MOI is a solo project of a photographer, artist, graphic designer and music producer Chaz Bundick from South Carolina. His music is ranked in the so-called “chillwave” next to friendly one-man projects such as the Neon Indian or Washed Out. He introduced his thoughtfully produced synthesizer pop in so far the most complete form on the disc the “Causers Of This” with the Carpark Records at the beginning of this year. Perhaps thanks to the relaxed atmosphere of his records the Toro Y Moi is also spoken about as the “beach music”, which Chaz comments: “Look at the bands like the Best Coast or the Wavves. They live on the beach. I get there hardly once in a year.” Kanye West persuasively commented the music on his blog: “LISTEN TO THIS GOOD SHIT”.

The San Francisco band with a simply beautiful name the MOON DUO consists of a partner couple of Sanae Yamanda and Erik “Ripley” Johnson. Erik is also a member of neo-psychedelic band the WOODEN SHIPS. The Moon Duo have not been playing long – only for about a year – but they have already recorded an EP with a progressive label the Sacred Bones and a debut LP “Escape” with the Woodsist label. The new hippie Moon Duo refer e.g. to John Coltrane, the Cluster and the Royal Trux. It is true that you can hear well all these influences in the rough garage lo-fi exceeding to blues, rock´n´roll and psychedelic sound. Those who liked the Crystal Stilts at Creepy Teepee last year should also like the Moon Duo.

”Her music is like your favourite blanket, into which you wrap yourself,” in such a poetic way a demon of dance parties Dan Deacon described to the world the music of his friend Nicole Schneit. The AIR WAVES are really mostly Nicole’s one-girl project, to which she invites colleagues. She writes imaginative folk songs, coming from the best tradition of the American song writing such as Neil Young, and sometimes a straight punk-rock sound of the Air Waves is close to the beginnings of the Pixies. Similarly to Bill Callahan/Smog or the Cat Power she also can pull at very nostalgic strings.

The TERROR BIRD project in an envoy of the freshest Canadian esprit to the Central European countries. The face of the TB is a keyboarder and fabulous singer Nikki Never, the drummer Jeremiah Haywood assists her. Together they play a dark lo-fi pop build up mainly on synthesizers similarly to e.g. the Casiotone For The Painfully Alone. They also refer to glam-rock, to which they are bound besides others by their affection to make-up and similar aesthetics. They are coming from Vancouver to Europe for the first time.

The trio SILK FLOWERS is coming here from New York - Mecca of the contemporary alternative music. The band, in which you can find also Ethan from the then Barr configuration, published so far one eponymous disk with the Post Present Medium label, which is managed by the members of the No Age band. The Silk Flowers earned by that a comparison to the best post-punk names of the 80ies such as the Suicide, as well as the film music by John Carpenter. Their sound is based mainly on synthesizers and a deep voice of singer Aviram.

The ECSTATIC SUNSHINE from Baltimore is a project of a sound boffin and producer Matt Papich, who featured in all configurations, which have so far recorded three albums with ES. From playful post-rock, build on ping pong exchanges of two guitars, over more rock-like attitude (with a drummer from the Ponytail) they attained a more ambient sound on their last disc so far “Yesterday´s Work”, which they are going to introduce in Kutná Hora. The Ecstatic Sunshine skilfully navigate similar waters like the Menomena. If you are missing chamber post-rock of not already existing legend the Dilute, then the Ecstatic Sunshine should compensate this deficit.

A couple of the LOVE CULT is coming from an exotic space for us countrymen – the so-called Karelia, the Northern region squeezed by Russia and Finland, in fact from its Russian section. Anna and Ivan produce sound performances on the borders of folk, electronics and drone, and they will remind the last year guests of the Creepy fest the Lucky Dragons not only by their girl/boy configuration. They admiringly bugger geographic and thought borders, they experienced split recordings with respected “Western” projects, e.g. the Deep Magic and the Cursillistas. In general, they tread nicely without any complex.

The TEARIST is a duet from Los Angeles consisting of keyboarder William and singer and performer Yasmine. Their art cohere with the presently frequented category of dark-wave and the influence of gothic bands headed by the Siouxsie is quite obvious, as well as of new wave and post-punk. Nevertheless they do not make do with only that and they add irony typical for the overseas generation of the third millenium. In live performances the daring dancer Yasmine draws the most of the attention. She fulfils herself on a lot of fronts, also outside of the Tearist – besides others she makes gnarled clips and short films with director and entertainer Eric Wareheim. This year the Tearist will publish a debut EP with the Post Present Medium.

CHRIS GARNEAU lived in Paris during his childhood, and you can hear it in the music of this New Yorker. As well as the fact that he refers to Nina Simone among his inspiration sources. Few years ago Jamie and Caralee from the Xiu Xiu brought him under the wing of a respected Absolutely Kosher label as their discovery. He has introduced his tender, chanson inspired music accompanied mostly by piano and strings on two equable discs, of which the last year one “El Radio” includes also the single “Fireflies” accompanied by marvellous video clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuGJfVAgiTM. His appearance at Creepy Teepee will be his local premier. If you exulted over Owen Pallett a.k.a. the Final Fantasy, you can be sure that Chris Garneau is of the same blood group.

The GNOD is a cosmopolitan configuration, whose central player is guitarist Patrick from Ireland, there appear also members from Portugal, Poland and other European countries. The Gnod label Manchester as their home. They have published several extraordinary cassettes and split singles, besides others with the psycho-metallic White Hills. This year they have published a record with a progressive overseas label Not Not Fun, specializing in psychedelic experiments. Sharp edges of the metallic sound of their music are being abraded by a hypnotic repetitiveness, when solid compositions turn into a trance experience.

The CAPTAIN AHAB couple from Los Angeles belongs besides the Foot Village or the HEALTH among the key alliances bound by an umbilical cord with the local cult arty club The Smell. What the CAPTAIN AHAB create is a good entertainment and also a well-thoughtout provocation of conservatism: popsongs, which Jonathan Snipes (beside others an author of independent film music) and Jim Merson convincingly recite from the stage, accompanied by pre-recorded beat, usually half naked up from waist (or down from waist). They may well sound very catching, like a classic repertoire of a commercial radio, but the texts are full of biting social and mainly sexual allusions and provocations, which could sound pretty painfully from any other mouth. The subversive CAPTAIN AHAB duo has a status of an “Old Maid card” in this year line-up of Creepy Teepee. Together with the Captain Ahab the DJ SKULL VOMIT is coming to unpack his wild breakcore Dj set - Anthony Welter from the San Francisco band the Eustachian and also the Belgium DJ and entertainer SICKBOY MILKPLUS.

COLLAPSING OPPOSITES is the name of an artistic alter ego of the Canadian Ryan McCormick, otherwise also a member of a rather well known Vancouver band, the They Shoot Horses Don´t They? Ryan creates under this name not only music but also art works and literary experiments. The COLLAPSING OPPOSITES gradually established as a four member band, which is also coming to Kutná Hora. The lo-fi aesthetics in the spirit of the 90ies, maybe a bit more excentric than the custom is. A delicacy for the fans of the Half Japanese, or the works by Jad Fair.

One of the several married/partner couples in this year Creepy Teepee line-up is the RAINBOW ARABIA, the couple Danny and Tiffany Preston from Los Angeles. They designate as their greatist inspiration the Seattle label Sublime Frequencies, specialized in bringing nearer mainly the African and Arabian folklore and pop to the Western alternative audience, who discovered for the world e.g. a Syrian bard Omar Souleyman. The music of the Rainbow Arabia is really a colourful, playful and entertaining amalgam of these influences, as well as of the new wave and punk. They published two EPs with the Manimal Vinyl label, they went on tour with the friendly and similar in many aspects HECUBA.

The CLAPSCLAP is a one-woman project of a creative lady Melissa Hawkes, a visual artist from The Museum School of Fine Arts in Boston. Besides the experimental electronic music, which shows a remarkable relation with the art of e.g. Panda Bear, Melissa also works in the sphere of fashion design. As the Clapsclap she has recently published the “Thick Sands” album.

From the Scottish GLASGOW Tom Marshall a.k.a. DAM MANTLE is coming to Kutná Hora, a student of the local art school. Also owing to the support by the Upset! The Rhythm label he is one of the most important discoveries of the British Isles alternative scene at this moment. His sound collages have ambient contours with broken beats like the Four Tet, but sometimes he surprises by melodic sung passages which remind the Animal Collective.
